Variable Fonts
I wrote an A List Apart article on the opportunities of variable fonts — covering how typography should scale as a first-class design element, and how font interpolation lets type adapt to readers and contexts. Nick Sherman’s sister post, Variable Fonts for Responsive Design, framed the broader format conversation.
A follow-on piece explored how designers should actually control n-dimensional variable fonts. Poor interfaces had already limited earlier Multiple Master and GX efforts; variable fonts needed tools that made axes visible and usable.
I built the web’s first Variable Font proof of concept using live fonts.
Variable fonts are supported in all major browsers.
